While scientists do not know exactly what causes psoriasis, we do know that the immune system and genetics play a big part. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease causing raised, red or silvery plaques to appear on the skin often associated with an itchy or stinging sensation. It typically affects the elbows, knees or scalp, although can appear on any part of the body. Usually, something triggers psoriasis to flare. Common triggers are stress, injury to the skin, certain medication, immune stressors like an infection, allergies, diet and changes in weather. The condition is not contagious – skin cells in people with psoriasis grow at an abnormally fast rate, which causes a buildup of skin lesions or plaque.
