Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
What is an Eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that diminishes aging signs of the upper and lower eyelids. Environmental elements together with lifestyle choices and heredity factors can all affect the appearance of the eye area. Droopy, saggy lids and puffy bags can create an angry, sad or tired expression. In most cases, a blepharoplasty is used to remove and redrape the skin, fat, and muscle of both the upper and lower eyelids, improving the contour and shape. Niki Christopoulos MD, FACS uses the most advanced techniques to restore the vibrancy, well rested and refreshed look you desire.
Am I a good candidate for a Blepharoplasty?
Ideal candidates for a blepharoplasty are patients who have:
- Eye bags or puffiness around the eyes
- Heavy looking eyelids
- Wrinkled or drooping skin in the upper or lower eyelids
Dr. Niki Christopoulos’ Approach to an Eyelid Surgery
The types of incisions are chosen to hide discreetly along natural skin creases. In an upper eyelid surgery, these incisions are well camouflaged in an upper eyelid crease. In the lower eyelid, the incision is just below the lash line. Dr. Christopoulos also uses a transconjuctival incision, which is hidden inside the lower eyelid, to re position fat and improve the overall contour.
Dr. Christopoulos is a double-board certified plastic surgeon and performs her surgeries in a fully accredited outpatient surgical facility. Anesthesia is administered by an anesthesiologist using either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for your comfort and safety during the procedure. The procedure can take anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on whether both the upper and lower eyelids are being treated.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery And Results
Depending on the type of procedure received, the recovery process can vary from individual to individual. Ordinarily, some bruising and swelling may occur in the eyelid area and may last anywhere from several days to several weeks. Within the first week, the sutures are removed and most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few days to a week. Results from your eyelid surgery will become visible as the bruising and swelling subside. Dr. Christopoulos is very active with her patients’ post-operative care. For this reason, recovery from eyelid surgery is closely monitored to help insure your goals are realized!
