Mohs Micrographic Surgery
What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?
The procedure was developed by Frederick Mohs in the 1930s and was appropriately named chemosurgery by its inventor because of the chemical interaction between zinc chloride and human tissue. In the 1980s the American College of Chemosurgery changed its name to the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the most effective treatment for skin cancer available, with a 98% success rate. During the Mohs procedure, Dr. Tracy Campbell expertly removes small layers of tissue. Each layer is “mapped” so the cancer cells’ exact locations are pinpointed and all of the skin cancer can be removed, both what is visible to the eye and what is underneath the surface, while leaving the smallest defect possible.
What to expect after Mohs surgery
After the skin cancer has been removed, Dr. Campbell utilizes precise reconstructive methods to cosmetically minimize scarring, for an aesthetically-pleasing outcome. The Mohs procedure itself is designed to minimize tissue excised due to the small surgical margin of one millimeter, therefore naturally leading to less scarring. 99% of Mohs closures are performed immediately after the surgery by Dr. Campbell in CCSD’s medical center, for the comfort and privacy of our patients.
