What is UPF Clothing?

For all our sun-safe patients this is an excellent question! Clothing is our first line of defense against damage from the sun, absorbing or blocking much of the harmful radiation. The more skin you cover, the better you are protected. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and indicates what fraction of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can penetrate fabric. A shirt with a UPF of 50, allows just 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. UPF is a rating used for clothing, whereas SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and applies to sunscreens or other cosmetic skin care products. If you are a cyclist, runner, surfer, parent or just concerned about how regularly you are able to safely reapply your SPF, why not try UPF in conjunction with your favorite sunscreen?
